Men's Tennis: Buckeyes Ranked in ITA Pre-Season Rankings

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team were among tennis’ top collegiate players announced Tuesday in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason singles and doubles rankings. Junior Justin Kronauge and senior Bryan Koniecko are ranked Nos. 8 and 9, respectively. The Buckeyes are the only team to have two athletes ranked in the Top 10 in singles.

Kronauge, a native of Dayton, Ohio, and Koniecko, from Long Island, N.Y., were named 2008 ITA All-Americans after leading the Buckeyes to their third-consecutive Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles and third-consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA championships.

Kronauge led the Buckeyes in singles wins last season with an overall record of 41-8, which is now tied for No. 4 on the all-time single-season wins list. Koniecko was named the 2008 Big Ten Athlete of the Year and is now ranked No. 10 on the Ohio State all-time singles wins list with 92 triumphs.

Also ranked close to the Top 10 is senior Steven Moneke at No. 11. Moneke received his second ITA All-American honor last season and completed 2008 play with a 38-7 singles record and his second-consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA championships.

Sophomore Matt Allare, who was the fourth Buckeye ranked in the Top 125, is No. 96. Allare finished his first season as a Buckeye with a 24-5 overall singles record.

In doubles, three Scarlet and Gray pairs ranked in the Top 25 nationally, with Koniecko and Kronauge topping the Buckeyes with the No. 7 ranking. Kronauge had an overall doubles record of 36-11 in two seasons with the Buckeyes, while Koniecko compiled an overall record of 36-5 and is now No. 4 on the Ohio State all-time doubles wins list with 91 victories.

Moneke and sophomore Balazs Novak cracked the Top 20 with the No. 17 ranking, while junior Mike O'Connell and Allare are No. 24.

The Buckeyes open up the 2008-09 season with at the D’Novo All-American Men’s Tennis Championships, Oct. 9-12 in Tulsa, Okla.
