ISLAMABAD: Taking exception to the verdict of the Supreme Court in the Asghar Khan case, the family of late President Ghulam Ishaq Khan has decided to challenge it through a review petition.
The former president’s family says Ghulam Ishaq Khan, who was a symbol of patriotism and honesty, rendered meritorious services for the country. “A self-made and selfless person, who was real force behind the endeavours to make the country’s defence impregnable, should be rewarded for his matchless role instead of being maligned for a thing which hasn’t proved and cannot be proven,” Ghulam Ishaq Khan’s daughter, Samina Anwar Khan said.
“He has been convicted without trial and, mind it, he was a person who would be placed by the history in the ranks of creators and defenders of the country,” she said.Senator Osman Saifullah, who is son of Samina Anwar and Anwar Saifullah Khan, president of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) KP chapter, came out with his criticism about the brief judgment of the case last month and claimed that his grandfather has been implicated without any evidence.
Senator Osman told The News Thursday that he would study the detailed judgment before taking any action since the family is in rage about the observations of the court. He was of the view that late Ghulam Ishaq Khan had always attached due esteem to the courts throughout his life and he was known for following the rules and regulations. “Ghulam Ishaq Khan always adhered to the constitution and law and none could claim that he ever deviated from the book. His worst enemies had never accused him for dishonesty or defying the law.”
The sources said that the family is acquiring the detailed judgment and meeting tomorrow (Saturday) to take a decision for engaging a legal expert for contesting the verdict of the court with reference to late Ghulam Ishaq Khan.
