One of the many magnificent things about Asia, other than its beauty year round and its people is the fact that all the mountains over 8,000 meters or 26,247 ft above sea level are located within the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges.
Though these peaks were discovered before the 1900s, all of them were summited from 1953 and onwards for the first time.
14. Shisha Pangma – “Place of the Saints” – Tibet
Shisha Pangma is at a height of 8,013m or 26,289 ft above sea level. It is the third highest peak in Tibet. Hsu Ching and Team of 9 Chinese were the first to summit this peak in 1964.
13. Gasherbrum II – “Shining Wall” – Pakistan/China
Located in the Karakorum Range, six peaks make up the Gasherbrum glacier with G-II being at 8,035 m (26,360 ft) above sea level. The glacier was discovered in 1889 by Captain Young Husband. It was not summited until 1956 by F.Moravec, S.Larch and H.Willenpart from Austria.
12. Broad Peak – local name is Faichan Kangri -Pakistan/China
Broad Peak is also located in the Karakorum mountain range, with a height of 8,047 m (26,400 ft). It was named after its peak being ‘broad’, it is over a mile long. It was first summited in 1957, by M.Schmuck, F.Wintersteller, K.Diemberger, and H.Buhl from Austria.
11. Gasherbrum I – Hidden Peak or K5 – Pakistan/China
The highest peak of the Gasherbrum glacier, G-I stands at 8,068 m or 26,470 ft above sea level. The name Hidden Peak comes from the fact of this peak’s remoteness. It was first summited by P.K Schoening and A.J Kauffman in 1958.
10. Annapurna – Nepal
Annapurna is located in the Himalayan range and is made up of three peaks, with the highest peak at a height of 8,091 m (26,545 ft) above sea level. The mountain is named after the Hindu goddess of nourishment. It was first summited in 1950 by M.Herzog and L.Lachenal from France.
9. Nanga Parbat – “Naked Mountain” – Pakistan
Located in the western Himalayan range with a height of 8,125 m(26,660 ft) above sea level. It is also known as the ‘Killer Mountain’ for the number of lives it has taken in one climb, it once took 16 lives. It was first summited in 1953 by Hermann Buhl, an Austrian.
8. Manaslu – Kutang – Nepal
Dhaulagiri is 8,167m or 26,795 ft above sea level. The name of the mountain is from the word ‘dazzling’ in Sanskrit. It was first summited in 1960 by A.Schelbert, E.Forrer, K.Diemberger, P.Diener from Switzerland and Nyima Dorji and Nawang Dorji from Nepal.
6. Cho Oyu -“Turquoise Goddess” – Nepal/Tibet

This particular beast of a mountain is considered a harder and more dangerous climb than Mt.Everest at 8,611 m or 28,250 ft above sea level. The National Mountain of Pakistan has never been summited during the winter due to the atrocious weather, and out of every four climbers that climb it one climber never returns, that’s the reason it is also known as the ‘Savage Mountain.’ As of 2010 only 302 people have managed to complete the climb. The first to complete the ascent were A.Compangnoni and L.Lacedelli from Italy in 1954.
