For Cracked voice

If you are used to giving lectures you might have experienced your voice cracking and at times you are left absolutely speechless.

The next seminar is tomorrow and you are absolutely tongue tied.

If this description fits your symptoms you can try this home remedy.

Ingredients

raisin (draksh) 500gm

sugar crystal (kalkandu, misri) 150 gms

saffron (kesar, kungumappoo) 1 gm

cardamom (ilaayichi, elakkai) 10 gm

a bowl and pestle to powder the things

You will need a small container and a pestle (usually used by asians) to prepare this remedy. It will not be possible to do it as well in a grinder.

You can use the grinder to powder the sugar crystal. Once it is powdered pass it through a sieve so that you get a very fine powder without lumps.

Take the raisins in the bowl and mash it with the pestle. Don't add water to the raisins. Go on hitting the raisin with the pestle. It will get mashed and appear like a sticky paste.

Take the sugar crystal powder, add a spoon full to the raisin and mash it with the pestle. Keep on repeating the process. That is, add a little bit of sugar crystal powder to the mashed raisins and pound it with the pestle.

This is a slow process. It will take about an hour for you to do this. The longer you pound the raisins with the crystal powder the better it will be.

Once they are are mashed together and mixed well take a bit in hand and make small balls or pellets.

The pellets have to be made immediately. Otherwise the mixture will turn too hard and cannot be rolled into balls.

Spread out the little balls ( about the size of marbles) in such a way that they do not touch each other. Spread them out on a tray.

Let them dry in shade for about an hour. They will get hardened and will not stick together once they are dry.

Store them in an air tight bottle.

Take a pellet and keep it in the mouth three times a day. This will clear your throat.

If you are a musician, actor or need to speak in a seminar, keep a pellet in your mouth just 15 minutes before the programme. Do not chew it and swallow it. Let it be in your mouth as long as you can keep it. And you will be able to speak or sing in a clear voice.

You can also keep it in your mouth just before going to bed. You will wake up with a great relief and clear voice.

COUGH

A wonderful natural solution to a cough is garlic (or onion) and honey. Chop up an entire bulb of garlic (or onion) and put it in a bowl. Cover the garlic (or onion) with honey and let the mixture sit overnight. In the morning, remove the garlic (or onion) and take two teaspons of the honey mixture. The honey is instantly soothing to the throat, and the garlic (or onion) has wonderful immune-boosting (and some say cancer-preventing) powers. It is, of course, very aromatic! Your loved ones should eat it too, so no one will mind the scent!

LARYNGITIS (loss of voice)

Causative factors:

  • Short term viral or bacterial infection due to an attack of cold.
  • Intake of exceedingly hot and cold drinks.
  • Drinking ice-cold water or any other cold beverage, eating an ice-cream immediately after taking fried food.
  • May also be caused by some other irritants like smoking, pan chewing, gutka, alcohol etc.
  • People working in dusty environments or those who use their voices continuously like singers, speakers etc.
  • Abnormal growth in the throat, infection of lungs due to tuberculosis may be some other factors.

Signs and symptoms

  • The characteristic sign is a hoarse voice, which may lead to total voice loss.
  • A sore throat and difficulty in swallowing is also common. Fever and cough may also follow.
  • The tongue may develop tastelessness.
  • Chronic laryngitis develops over a period of time and sufferers may cough and clear their throats regularly and always have a hoarse voice.
