The Atlantic Road (Atlanterhavsveien in Norwegian) runs between two Norwegian towns Kristiansund and Molde in the county of More og Romsdal in Western Norway. It’s an 8.3 kilometre long section of County Road 64 that links together a string of islands in the Norwegian Sea and it includes several viaducts, eight bridges and four amazing viewpoints. The longest and most prominent of the eight bridges is the 260 meter long Storseisundet Bridge which has a dramatic and beautiful curve.

The construction of the Atlantic road started on August 1st, 1983 which was hampered by twelve hurricanes, but the road finally opened six years later on July 7th, 1989. Around 122 million Norwegian krone were spent on its construction.

This exciting road is full of swooping twists and turns around and between the tiny islands which are often struck with the devastating ocean waves. It is an absolute masterpiece set amongst the hills, lakes and rivers of Norway’s fine natural landscape. It provides an open sea view, beautiful view of rich bird life and seals and unforgettable fishing experience. It also features the five kilometre long Atlantic Ocean tunnel, the deepest undersea tunnel in the world which connects Kristiansund (Gomalandet island) to the island Averøy.

It has been awarded the status of National Tourist Route because of its incredible architecture and has been declared the world’s best road trip. It is also a popular site for automotive commercials. In 2005 it was voted the Norwegian Construction of the Century.
