Scientists have been able to create a retina prosthetic that could restore sight to millions of people who have lost their vision to retinal diseases such as macular degeneration.

Current artificial retinas require implant surgery, and only restore crude vision. The new prostheses provide better vision, with no surgery required.


Optogenetics infuses neurons with light-sensitive proteins from blue-green algae that causes them to fire when exposed to light.


High-tech glasses with embedded cameras, encoder chips and miniature lights would be required.
