A new world-wide study lists Indonesia as the country with the largest number of Muslims, followed by Pakistan and India
“Previously published estimates of the size of the global Muslim population have ranged widely from 1 billion to 1.8 billion,” said the centre, which analysed over 1,500 sources, including census reports, demographic studies and general population surveys.
The key findings of the study, released here late Wednesday, are:
— India has the third-largest population of Muslims worldwide— China has more Muslims than Syria
— Russia is home to more Muslims than Jordan and Libya combined
— While Muslims are found on all five inhabited continents, more than 60 per cent of the global Muslim population is in Asia
— Middle east and North Africa account for 20 per cent of the Muslim population
— The Middle East-North Africa region has the highest percentage of Muslim-majority countries
— More than half of the 20 countries and territories in Middle East-North Africa region have populations that are approximately 95 per cent Muslim or greater
— More than 300 million Muslims, or one-fifth of the world’s Muslim population, live in countries where Islam is not the majority religion
— These minority Muslim populations are often quite large
— Of the total Muslim population, 10-13 per cent are Shias and 87-90 per cent are Sunnis Muslims.
— Most Shias, between 68-80 percent, live in just four countries, namely Iran, Pakistan, India and Iraq
The new report has an executive summary, maps and charts to illustrate the geographic distribution of Muslims, explanations of the study’s methodologies and a list of data sources by country.
According to the study, Indonesia accounts for the largest number of Muslims with 202.87 million, or 88.2 per cent of the country’s population, followed by Pakistan with 174.08 million, or 96.3 per cent of the population.
India is home to 160.95 million, representing 13.4 per cent of the country’s population, or 10.3 per cent of their global numbers. India also tops the list of countries with the largest number of Muslims living in any country as a minority community.
Bangladesh, Egypt, Nigeria, Iran, Turkey Algeria and Morocco, in that order, make up the 10 countries with the largest population of Muslims going by the sheer numbers.
- Muslim population: 1.57 billion people (23% of the world population - 6.8 billion), one-fourth of the world's population.
- Only 15% of Muslims are Arab (Middle East)
- 62% of the world Muslim population lives in Asia and 20% in the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa)
- 300 million Muslims, live in countries where Islam is not the majority religion: China (more Muslims than Syria), India (the third-largest population of Muslims worldwide), Russia (more Muslims than Jordan and Libya)

Religious populations in the world
- ISLAM -
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Islam is the world’s fastest-growing religion by number of conversions each year: "Although the religion began in Arabia, by 2002 80% of all believers in Islam lived outside the Arab world. In the period 1990-2000, approximately 12.5 million more people converted to Islam than to Christianity". Part of the books quote can be seen online from this extract from Google Books. This was again shown in the 2005, 50th anniversary edition of Guinness Book of World Records, although the number of conversions was not mentioned this time.
In 1990, 935 million people were Muslims and this figure had risen to around 1.2 billion by the year 2000, meaning that around this time one in five people were followers of Islam. According to the BBC, a comprehensive American study concluded in 2009 the number stood at 1 in 4 with 60% of Muslims spread all over the Asian continent: "A report from an American think-tank has estimated 1.57 billion Muslims populate the world - with 60% in Asia".The report was done by the Pew Forum Research Centre. The forum also projected that in 2010 out of the total number of Muslims in the world 62.1% will live in Asia.
However the report also included a statement saying "While the global Muslim population is expected to grow at a faster rate than the non-Muslim population, the Muslim population nevertheless is expected to grow at a slower pace in the next two decades than it did in the previous two decades. From 1990 to 2010, the global Muslim population increased at an average annual rate of 2.2%, compared with the projected rate of 1.5% for the period from 2010 to 2030". The report also made reference to the fact that Muslims are estimated to make up 23.4% of the total global population in 2010 (out of a total of 6.9 billion people) and that by 2030 Muslims will represent about 26.4% of the global population (out of a total of 7.9 billion people). The Pew report also highlights that there is insufficient data available on religious conversion from its own findings given the complexities of identity and the difficulties of obtaining data: "Statistical data on conversion to and from Islam are scarce. What little information is available suggests that there is no substantial net gain or loss in the number of Muslims through conversion globally..."
