What You'll Be Creating
With a few scraps of felt and just 15 minutes, you can create these adorable egg warmers and celebrate Easter with your new bunny friends. Use the free downloadable pattern I prepared for you and create your bunnies by following my step-by-step instructions.
Supplies
- Red, pink and white felt
- Red thread
- Needle
- Sewing pins
- Scissors
- Black marker
- Thick pink marker
- Hot glue sticks
- Hot glue gun
- Printer
1. Cut Out Felt Parts of the Bunny
Step 1
Print out the template on an A4 sheet of paper. Just a few words so that you understand how the template works: shapes 1 and 2 are identical and they form the body of the bunny (back and front). Shape 3 is the face of the bunny, while shapes 4 and 5 are the inner part of the bunny's ears.
Carefully cut along the dotted line of the printed template until you have all the pieces that will form your Easter bunny.
Step 2
Now it's time to choose the color of your bunny. I made two egg cosies, one red and one blue. They are both colors suitable for celebrations, plus they look great together. Now, just pick one color to make your first bunny. If you plan to create more, make sure you choose colors that go well together so that your Easter table looks gorgeous.
Place the felt sheet flat on the working surface. On top of the felt, place template pieces 1 and 2. Make sure you place them close together, so you can save the extra felt for future projects. Pin the paper patterns on to the felt sheet, making sure that the felt remains as straight as possible.
Go around the perimeter of the shapes to ensure that the paper patterns stay in place during the next step.
Step 3
Holding together the paper and the felt, carefully cut around the perimeter of the shapes.
Step 4
Once the two felt shapes are ready, you can remove the sewing pins and separate the paper from the felt parts.
Step 5
Now, grab a sheet of pink felt. This will form the inner part of the bunny's ears. Place pattern pieces 4 and 5 on the pink felt and pin them in place.
Step 6
Using a pair of scissors, carefully cut along the pattern. Once the felt ears are cut, unpin the paper template.
Step 7
Get some white felt to create the face. Pin the paper shape No 3 on to the white felt sheet.
Step 8
Trim the ellipse perimeter to create the base for the bunny's face and remove the pins.
2. Create the Character
Step 1
Place the felt ellipse shape you created from pattern shape No 3 on the working surface. Now, you need to draw in the face. Feel free to create your own expression and personality, or follow my instructions.
You need a thin black marker. Felt can be a bit tricky to draw on as it has a rough surface. It's wise to practice drawing on a scrap piece of felt before illustrating your final piece. First, make two semi-circles on top of the face. These will be the eyes. Now, if you wish to make a girl bunny, you can add small vertical lines as the eye lashes. Have a look at the blue bunny for inspiration at the end of the tutorial.
At the bottom of the face and placed centrally, create another semi-circle of almost the same size to give your bunny a mouth. Don't forget to add two bunny teeth in the middle.
Your bunny's face is almost there! If you wish to add extra cuteness, just use a thick pink marker and create two pink circles as the cheeks. You don't need to be super precise with these ones.
Step 2
At this point, you should have all the components ready to form the egg cosy. You should have two red felt pieces for the body, two pink ears and a white ellipse with a cute face painted on it.
Plug in your hot glue gun and wait a few minutes until the glue gets hot. Once the glue is liquid, apply some to the back side of the face. Make sure to apply glue at the edges of the piece as well.
