There are a number of ancient civilizations that called our land, Pakistan, their home. Civilizations as old 10,000 BC and more. Some of these civilizations left behind sites that show how advanced even the ancient man used to be. Tools, utensils, developed sewage systems and toys have been found. These sites are amazing studies on the how people used to live and their cultures. Regarded highly by the world as centers of learning and discovery, if you have not made time to visit them, then you really are missing out.



1. MOENJODARO

Moenjodaro means “Mound of the dead”, eerie isn’t it? It dates back to 2600 BC and was discovered in 1922. The sheer size of the city, and its provision of public buildings and facilities, suggests a high level of social organization, quite amazing for its time. One of the sites of the infamous Indus Valley Civilization, Moenjodaro was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1980. “The great bath of Moenjodaro” is something that needs to be seen for its greatness to be understood.

2. TAKHT-I-BAHI

Located in Mardan, Khyberpakhtunkhwa, Takht-i-Bahi was first a Zoroastrianism complex which was later converted into a Buddhist complex, after the spread of Buddhism around 100 BC. The site was discovered in 1864 and a large number of artifacts discovered from it reside in the British Museum.

3. MAKLI

Makli covers around 8 sqkm, making it the largest necropolis in the world. It is the burial site of some 125,000 kings, queens, sufis and landlords of the area, with tombs dating as far back as the 14th century. The most famous tomb in Makli is that of Saint Pir Murad. Some outstanding ancient brick and stone structures can be found here.

4. CHAUKHANDI TOMBS

Located 29 miles from Karachi near Landhi, these tombs are remarkable because they show ancient Islamic influences in Sindh which is very hard to find in the area. The tombs were built during the Mughal era around the 15th century. The tombs are attributed the Jokhio tribe of Sindh and some prominent Baloch tribes.

5. MEHRGARH
Mehrgarh in Balochistan is a New Stone Age civilization dating back to 6500 BC. It is one of the earliest sites in the entire world that show signs of farming and agriculture. Mehrgarh is also the site of the discovery of the oldest ceramic figurines and pottery in Asia. About 32,000 artifacts have been discovered from the site since 1974, when it was first discovered.

6. TAXILA

Taxila is a historical archaeological site located in Rawalpindi district, Punjab. It dates back to the Persian era of 600 BC. It is considered to be home to the earliest universities of the world. It was discovered in the mid 1900s and was the most visited site in Pakistan till 2006. Poor management and lack of attention has put Taxila on the verge of total extinction.

7. HARAPPA

Harappa is the site of the ancient Bronze-age city, a part of the Indus Valley Civilization. The city like Moenjodaro emerged around 2600 BC. Writings have been discovered in the area which suggest that people could read and write as far back as 3100 BC.

8. RANIGAT

Ranighat is the largest site in Gandhara region encompassing a 4 mile radius. It is believed to once have been the center of Buddhist art and culture. The city dates back to 100 AD. The breathtaking beauty and marvel of Ranigat has to be experienced first hand. There is nothing quite like it in Pakistan.

9. KATASARAJ TEMPLE

A hindu complex situated in the Chakwal District, Punjab, it was made as a testament to he Hindu God Shiva. The temple comes with its share of Hindu legends and myths. Evidence has been found that place the temple’s origins as far back as 7000 BC. The temple comes with an amazing little pond. The pond is drying up but authorities have taken notice. Make time and visit the temple.

10. SHAHBAZGARHI ROCK INSCRIPTIONS

Ancient rock-inscriptions (Kharosthi script) on a rock that was later cut into two large rocks. Dating back to 300 BC, the time of Ashoka, they could well be the first writings in South Asia.

11. ROHTAS FORT

This historical fort is located near Jehlum. It was built under orders from Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century. The height of the outer wall varies between 10 and 18 metres. Its thickness varies between 10 and 13 metres. The Rohtas Fort has 12 gates. All of them are built in ashlar stone. A truly impregnable fort!

12. REHMAN DHERI

This ancient site is located near D.I.Khan in Khyberpakhtunkhwa. It is one of the oldest urban centers of the region and dates back to 4000 BC. The fortified town contains a massive wall that covers the entire habitation area.

13. GANDHARA

An ancient kingdom of Peshawar that extended to Swat, Gandhara was established in 1500 BC. It was ruled by the Kushan Kings when Buddhism, Animism and Zoroastrianism were practiced in the region. It was conquered by Mahmud of Ghaznavi in 1021. Artifacts have been discovered that date back almost 15000 years.

14. BANBHORE

Dating back to the 1st century BC, Banbhore is located to the East of Karachi. Remains of the earliest known mosque of the region (727 AD) are still preserved in the region. It was a medieval port city and a center of trade. The port can still be observed at the site.
