Aamir Khan

Biography

Aamir Hussain Khan was born in Mumbai, India, on March 14, 1965. The son of film producer Tahir Hussain, Khan made his big screen debut at the age of 8 in Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), which was produced and directed by his uncle, Nasir Hussain. He put his cinema career on hold to become the state tennis champion of Maharashtra, and marked his return to the screen in 1984's Ketan Mehta's Holi.
Aamir khan lands his breakthrough role

Directed by his cousin Mansoor Khan, 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak heralded Aamir Khan as a major new talent, earning him Filmfare's Best Male Debut Award for 1988, as well as his first Best Actor nomination. He received a second Filmfare Best Actor nod for his work in 1989's Raakh, and a third for Dil, India's box-office champ of 1990. Khan earned further Filmfare nominations for his performances in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), and Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995).

Starring opposite Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani, the highest grossing movie of the year, Aamir Khan finally won his first Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1996. More Best Actor nominations followed for his work in Ghulam (1998) and Sarfarosh (1999), in which he portrayed a policeman who takes on border terrorism. That same year, he appeared as the Ice-Candy man in Deepa Mehta's Earth, India's official entry to the Academy Awards.

Aamir khan turns to producing

In 2001, Aamir Khan Productions was founded, and the studio scored a huge hit with its debut release. Lagaan garnered international acclaim and several major awards, a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination, and earned Khan his second Filmfare Best Actor trophy. Lagaan turned out to be the last movie he would appear in for four years, as he took a break from Bollywood to take care of personal matters.

Aamir Khan divorced Reena Dutta, his wife of 15 years, in 2002. In December 2005, he married Kiran Rao, an assistant director on Lagaan. He returned to the big screen in 2005's Mangal Pandey: The Rising, and notched up yet another Filmfare nomination. The following year's Rang De Basanti earned him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance.

Aamir khan turns to directing

Aamir Khan produced Taare Zameen Par, India's official Oscar entry for 2007, and received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor nod for his secondary role. The movie also marked his directorial debut, and he was honored with a Filmfare Best Director Award for his efforts. In 2008, Aamir Khan starred in Ghajini, a Hindi version of Christopher Nolan's 2000 thriller Memento, which went on to become the top grossing film in Bollywood history. Aamir Khan's credits for 2009 include appearances in Luck by Chance and Three Idiots.
