Serena Williams stopped the Russians from creating history when she recorded a come-from-behind victory over eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. In a match that was suspended due to immense heat for 20 minutes, Kuznetsova continued the spree when the match resumed under the roof, however, just when the 7-5, 5-3 on serve lead was looking like a possible knockout from Svetlana, Serena roared back and raised her game to a new level altogether, reeling off 10 out of next 11 games to close out the match that she will probably remember going into the semifinals against another Russian Elena Dementieva. The olympic champion easily edged past Spaniard Carla Suarez-Navarro 6-2, 6-2 in the first match of the day.

The men's quarterfinals of the day were no less in terms of quality tennis, when the Spanish Davis Cup hero proved that his talent is not limited to team events, as he took out last year's finalist Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in a match that saw some amazing groundstrokes from both the players. Tsonga levelled the match, clinching the second set, but lost his serves pretty early in the next two sets to hand Verdasco a place in his first ever grand slam semifinal.

Verdasco meets top seed and world champion Rafael Nadal in the semifinals on friday. The Wimbledon champion defeated sixth seed Giles Simon avenging his loss to Frenchman in the semifinals of Madrid Masters last year. The Spaniard played like a true champion , and even after resistance from Simon at several occassions, Nadal squandered all chances of a comeback, with a 6-2, 7-5, 7-5 win to consolidate his chances at winning his maiden Aussie Open title.

Day 10 of the Open will feature two ladies and one men's semifinals between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick.
