i think

He said to me, “What are you doing?” iss ka answer ye hai

He asked me what i was doing.

cos reporting question sentence hai /:) orr iss mein said ko asked, inquired etc mein change krty hai inn dono ka meaning same hota hai asked orr inquired ka but use sentence ko dak kr hi kia jaye ga /:) orr jab isy indirect mein change kr dye gie tou iss ka question mark khtam hw jaye ga

am i right?

the 4th option seems a relevant reply.
4- He asked me What I was doing.
Note: said changes to asked because the direct speech is an interrogative sentence.[DOUBLEPOST=1356014708][/DOUBLEPOST]

your answer is correct but I have to mention here that in reported speech said can not be change in all situations except the intterogative statements it changes from said to asked for describing the intterogation.

for example:
simple tense
direct speech:- "I like it" he said.
indirect speech:- "he said he liked it".

intterogative sentence
direct speech:- He said to me, “What are you doing?”
indirect speech:- He asked me what i was doing.

I hope you got it. :)

answer sab ka theek hay :-bd
lemme explain it a bit more!
when for direct speech u r using a simple sentence(not interrogative)
for say
He said,"i like it"
the indirect form will be as follow (the rule of changing direct to indirect is,,,,,,
  • see the first part of sentence and change the second part according to the tense used in the first part,,,
  • remove all commas
  • add That after said.

He said that he liked it.(when ever u have to remove the inverted commas after said, "That" must be added as a bridge between both parts of the sentence,

He said That i liked it. no comma will be used in indirect speech.
if u r replacing said with Asked/reported/inquired etc there is no need of adding "That".

for interrogative!
he said to me," what i am doing?"
He asked me what i was doing. (no need of adding that after asked/inquired etc)

interrogative sentence hay to obviously inquired ya asked most suitable hain to replace said,,,,, sentence k first part may past tense hay "said to me" to accordingly hamain sentence ka next part b past tense ki hi kisi form may change karna hoga!

Chlain next Aap may se koi dain {(popcorn)}[DOUBLEPOST=1356057119][/DOUBLEPOST]
