As-Salaam alaikum,
The at-Tahiyyat du'a that we recite in prayers, 'at-tahiyaat wal mubarakaatu Lillahi wa-Salawaatu wa't-tayyibatu' means we are giving all good thing and our greetings to Allah, Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, from the station of Witnessing Allah's Oneness and the Prophet's Messenger-hood.
At the end of the at-Tahiyyat we recite/say:- 'as-Salaamu alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyu, Wa rahmaatullahi, Wa barakatuhu, as-Salaamu 'alayna wa ala ibadullahi S-saaliheen!'
Our situation as we say: 'As-Salaamu alayka ayyuha 'n-Nabi' is that we are addressing the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, directly... minding rules of Arabic Language...and the Prophet is present and listening. The 'Kaf' in 'alayk' infers that PRESENT tense. At that moment we are addressing the Prophet in his presence. Note this well.
