Genetically modified male mosquitoes have been released in the Cayman Islands in an effort to stamp out dengue fever.

The male mosquitoes are sterile, so that no offspring will be created when they mate.

The 40 acre area where the test mosquitoes were released has seen an 80 percent drop in numbers as of August, without the use of toxic chemicals.

While more than 2 million people infected by mosquitoes die annually, detractors fear the effects the decimated mosquito population could have on dependent species.
