Supplies
- Coloured tissue paper (in at least three shades)
- Newspaper
- Balloon
- White craft glue
- Scissors
- String
- Ribbon
- Treats for the piñata (e.g. confetti, small chocolate eggs, small toys)
1. Prepare the Balloon
Step 1
Prepare your materials. Mix equal quantities of white craft glue and water in a bowl to make your papier-mâché mix. Stir well.
Cut the newspaper into equal sized strips, about 3cm by 8cm wide. You will need enough strips of paper to cover the balloon in three layers.
Step 2
Blow up the balloon, tying it securely with a knot. Attach a piece of string to the knot in the balloon.
Step 3
Dip a strip of newspaper into the papier-mâché mix. Make sure the strip is coated well, but not dripping.
Place the strip of newspaper onto the balloon, making sure to smooth down the strip as you go.
Step 4
Repeat Step 3, overlapping strips of paper over each other, until you have covered the entire balloon.
Leave a small hole around the top of the balloon.
Repeat for a second and third layer.
Leave to dry overnight, using the string to hang the balloon. You could use a dowel between two chairs to hang the balloon.
Step 5
Once dry, pop the balloon by placing a pin in the balloon near the top (where the knot is).
Step 6
Remove the balloon from the papier-mâché egg.
2. Add the Treats
Step 1
Stuff your papier-mâché balloon with treats, like confetti, chocolate eggs and small toys, through the small hole you left at the top of the egg.
Step 2
Cover the hole in the papier-mâché egg with masking tape.
3. Decorate the Egg With Paper Fringe
Step 1
Cut strips of crepe or tissue paper into long rectangles. These rectangles should measure about 4cm by 10cm.
Use scissors to cut 3cm fringes 1cm apart into the long end of the rectangle. Leave 1cm at the top of the rectangle uncut.
Step 2
Place a drop of glue on the bottom centre of the papier-mâché egg. Now place the fringe on top of the glue.
Step 3
Glue the fringe around the centre of the papier-mâché egg. Overlap the lines of fringe. Repeat until you have three lines of fringing in one colour.
Step 4
Repeat step 3, alternating between the different colours. Make sure you have three lines of fringing for each colour.
Repeat all the way to the top of the papier-mâché egg.
4. Finish the Piñata
Step 1
Poke a hole in the top of the egg using a sharp pair of scissors.

Tie a knot into a loop of ribbon. Push the knot through the hole. You may want to use a pencil to help.
Enjoy Your Easter Egg Piñata
Now it's time to enjoy all that hard work! Hang your piñata over your Easter table and wait for the compliments to roll in.
If you'd like to use the piñata in a game, players are traditionally blindfolded and take turns trying to break open the piñata with a bat or a stick. Otherwise you can cut a small flap into the bottom of your pinata, glue some ribbons to the inside of the flap, and guests can pull open the flap for a shower of confetti and Easter treats at the end of your dinner.
