Tablets are a convenient option for watching high-definition movies and TV shows while traveling, but that content can hog a lot of memory. You can store it on the cloud, but then you need an internet connection to retrieve it.
Seagate’s solution is to store your movies and music on the company’s new mobile storage drive, the Wireless Plus. The drive creates its own Wi-Fi hot spot that can be used to stream content to your mobile device or laptop, so you don’t have to worry about reaching the cloud.
Setup is easy. After you download Seagate’s app, a tutorial takes you through the process of establishing the drive’s wireless network and connecting your mobile device. To put the files on the device, you plug it into a computer and move the files by dragging and dropping. The drive is formatted for PCs, but it is compatible with Macs after you download some installation software.
When the Wireless Plus is on, the content stored there will appear on your mobile device. Seagate says the range of the drive is about 150 feet. You are able to stream music to your iPhone from anywhere in your home.
With a terabyte of storage, the Wireless Plus can carry more than 500 high-definition movies or thousands of songs and photos. Fortunately, the Wireless Plus worked seamlessly at jetliner cruising height. The device’s rechargeable battery lasts 10 hours on a full charge.
Seagate says the drive can stream to as many as eight devices simultaneously, which makes it handy for family vacations. And it works with a variety of operating systems, including iOS, Android and Kindle Fire.
The Wireless Plus drive costs $200 and is available at Seagate’s e-commerce site and retailers like Walmart, Best Buy and Staples. It comes with a USB 3.0 adapter and cable, a wall charger and a USB-to-DC power cable. The only thing missing is a case to carry it all.
