Assalaamo-3laekum warahmatullaahi wa...

So you’ve probably heard all these terms being used on TV, the internet and even heard people discussing them around you. We take you through each term one by and one and you too can jump right into the conversation! Let’s start by covering the major differences between different 'generation' networks. The ‘g’ stands for generation for anyone who is not well versed with telecom jargon.

We begin with 2G which allowed for voice calls and text messaging. 2G was followed by 2.5G which has been the mobile network technology in Pakistan to date i.e. the means by which you have been accessing internet on your mobile phone so far! The speed is slow which also means that only a limited number of internet services can be performed optimally.

After the auction for 3G and 4G licenses, Pakistan now has both 3rd and 4th generation mobile network technology. 3G will allow high speed internet access as well as services such as voice and video calling, file transmission, better internet browsing, video streaming, social gaming and much more.

4th generation mobile networks or 4G is believed to provide all the services that 3G does, but the speed will be faster than 3G. At this point in time, all the smart operators have opted for 3G to utilize the opportunities that 3G brings which currently are not realistic for 4G. The reason being that the ecosystem for 4G in Pakistan is very much in its infancy and thus does not merit an investment in 4G license at this point in time.

3G in Pakistan

Three cheers for Pakistan as we finally get the license to use 3G technology in the country! If you’re new to the term 3G and how it will make our lives so much better, then no fear, we’ll cover the basics with you.

What is 3G?

3G technology allows fast, on-the-go internet access on your mobile phone. 3G is an evolution of the 2G technology or Edge that has been in use in Pakistan. Most of you would know that that the ‘E’ sign when you were using internet on your phone stood for Edge. This ‘E’ sign denoting Edge will be replaced by 3G, ‘H’ or ‘H+’

What difference will this make to you, an existing or a new user of mobile internet?

The 3G internet experience will differ from 2G or Edge not only in terms of speed but also in terms of the services offered. Earlier, video streaming on the go was impossible. Now you can be stuck in traffic and stream the T20 cricket match on your phone you were missing out on!

What other benefits will 3G bring?
Entertainment is only one of the many aspects that 3G is expected to improve our quality of life in. We can look forward to increased internet usage across the country which is something all cellular companies in Pakistan would be very excited about! Cellular network companies have been striving to make internet access more and more prevalent in Pakistan

High speed internet on the go can contribute to education by distributing information easily and providing teaching/training material to remote areas. It is also expected to contribute to more diverse and secure financial services on mobile devices.

When shopping for a new cell phone, one of the most important decisions you have to make is whether to select a 3G or newer 4G model. In most cases, 4G phones offer greater data speeds than their 3G counterparts, but this can vary based on a number of different factors. Understanding the different 3G and 4G technologies, as well as doing some research on coverage in your area, can help you decide if opting for 4G is worth the extra expense for you.

3G
3G refers to the so-called “third generation” of cell phone technologies, standards that carriers began rolling out in the U.S. in 2003. The most common 3G data protocols are EDGE, EV-DO and HSPA, each based on a different, earlier standard. The International Telecommunications Union has set no official standards for data rates for 3G technology, although most standards in this group offer at least 144 kilobits per second of download capacity. Carriers have significantly upgraded their networks over the years, however. By 2012, 3G speeds could range between 400 kilobits and 2 megabits per second, depending on your carrier and region.

4G
What constitutes a 4G technology has become a topic of discussion within the cell phone industry. Carriers began rolling out their own so-called “4G” networks in the U.S. beginning in 2008, but there was very little standardization in the new technologies. In some cases, one company’s 4G speeds could be inferior to another carrier’s older 3G offering. In 2012, Wi-Max, HSPA+ and LTE are 4G technologies, due to their use of the Multiple Input/Multiple Output, or MIMO, standard. This allows cell phones to receive and transmit data simultaneously across multiple frequencies, increasing speeds dramatically. In 2012, average 4G speeds could range between 3.5 and 13 megabits, depending on the network in your area.

Latency and Reliability
If you are looking for the best data connection possible, a 4G carrier is your best choice. The wider frequency range available for data transfers ensures a more reliable connection than you would get using 3G, preventing dropped transfers and improving your ability to stream content to your phone without interruptions or jitters. While performance will always depend on the strength of the signal to your phone, you can expect better speed and latency using a 4G connection.

Coverage
One important consideration when making the choice between 3G and 4G technology is the coverage available in your area. If a 4G phone moves out of range of a 4G network, you will only receive 3G speeds due to the degraded signal. If your area lacks heavy 4G coverage, selecting an older model phone may save you some money. In addition, using a 4G phone in a 3G area may reduce your standby time as the phone constantly searches for a higher-quality connection while in use. This scanning can negatively affect your battery capacity, although you may be able to force the phone into 3G mode while outside of 4G range.

4G and LTE
The 4G technology is the successor to the 3G technology. Cellular providers are still building out their 4G networks. Theoretically, 4G is much faster than 3G. But before we start comparing 4G speed to 3G speed, it is important to understand there are different versions of 4G.

When talking about 4G, things can get a little confusing. Basically, there is 4G and 4G LTE. Many people consider LTE to be true 4G technology. Generally, if a cellular provider describes a 4G network without mentioning LTE, they are probably talking about a High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network. The HSPA network is a faster version of the 3G GSM network. While not as fast as an LTE network, it is still faster than a 3G network. Since LTE is still relatively new, the cellular providers haven’t fully built out their LTE networks yet. Be careful when looking at the network coverage maps on the providers’ websites. Some companies claim to have broad nationwide 4G coverage. They may really be taking about HSPA coverage and not LTE coverage.

In theory, LTE can be up to ten times faster than 3G. In practice, the actual network speed will vary based on network load and signal strength. Even if LTE does not meet its theoretical speed, it is still much faster than 3G. Activities that require large amounts of data, such as streaming movies, work very well on an LTE network. If you plan to perform a lot of data-hungry activities or simply want the best performance when surfing the Internet, you should really plan on buying a smartphone that supports LTE.

If you are considering buying an iPhone, you will find three models available: iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 are sold at reduced prices because they are older models. The iPhone 5 is the newest model and supports LTE. The iPhone 4S supports HSPA, which some cellular carriers call 4G. The iPhone 4 will only support 3G networks.
