ISLAMABAD: Pointing out the role of Lashkars in fighting against the Taliban, security management experts and defence analysts working at premier think-tanks of the capital say that sacrifices of such local militias comprising common tribesmen should be acknowledged and appreciated at the national level.

“These tribesmen have suffered thousands of casualties but are still facing the terrorists with courage and honour,” said an analyst closely following the insurgency in Fata. “The urge and determination of Lashkars to maintain peace and resist all terrorist activities are commendable.”

The analyst said that these tribesmen understood that terrorists and its foreign comrades in arms had already greatly damaged the tribal society and if not stopped, would totally change the fabric of the Pakhtun culture, which did not teach massacres of innocent through suicide bombing and beheadings.

Another expert with considerable experience of serving in Fata and the KP said that the militants had tackled the Lashkars ruthlessly. Giving several examples of the militants killing the Lashkar members and elders, he said the Lashkars, nevertheless, were standing like a rock in the face of the terrorists.

He said that in the face of Lashkar and law-enforcement agencies onslaught, the terrorists were now frustrated in getting suitable recruitment bases.According to sources, the first Lashkar to evict the terrorists was raised in Lakki Marwat. Then came Hangu and Buner districts where Lashkars were raised and which purged the areas of militants.

“Had the Lashkars around Peshawar not strongly resisting the militants operating around the provincial capital, sufferings of the people of the city would have been considerably multiplied,” the analyst added. —Waqar Ahmed
